Snow Recipes for Family Fun
There is nothing to compare to a child’s excitement when the first snow of the year arrives. Making a snowman, a snow angel, or having a plain, old-fashioned snowball fight outside your Salt Lake City apartment is great family entertainment. But,oh what fun it is to make ice cream and slushies with snow! Tastier and cheaper than any store bought version, snow ice cream and slushies will become a family favorite.
First, we need to clearly define CLEAN snow. This is not what the snowplow has gathered next to your car! Nor is it snow from a couple of days ago. After it has snowed for one to two hours, a lot of the pollutants are cleared from the air. Collect snow that has fallen after this in areas off the beaten path. Ready! Here are some snow ideas for you and your family to enjoy!
Basic Snow Ice Cream Recipe
- 1 cup of whole milk or whole chocolate milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cups sugar
- 4 – 5 cups CLEAN Snow
Classic Snow Ice Cream Recipe
- 1 gallon or big bowl of CLEAN snow
- 1 14-oz can of sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tsp vanilla or chocolate syrup to taste.
Snow Cream Recipe
- 1-3 cups of CLEAN snow
- 1/2 cup whipping cream or half and half
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 2-3 drops vanilla or chocolate syrup to taste
Directions
Gather the CLEAN snow, not packed, and put it in the freezer apartment while you prepare the other ingredients. Blend the milk, flavoring and sugar together until the sugar is dissolved. Slowly add the snow to your mixture stirring constantly until it is the consistency of ice cream. Snow ice cream does not re-freeze well, so eat it immediately. Enjoy!
There are many variations for snow ice cream flavors and here are a few ideas.
- Add a beaten egg for a nog taste.
- Try some other flavorings, cinnamon, butterscotch, rum, or peppermint.
- Add pureed fruit, such as strawberry or peaches.
- Drop a scoop of snow ice cream into your favorite soda.
Snow Slushies
- 1 packet of Kool-aid
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 pitcher of clean snow
To the pitcher of CLEAN snow add the Kool-aid and sugar, and mix well.
When the snow flies, kids love to make snow ice cream and snow slushies! But beware…every time it snows they’ll be asking for more! Easy to make and inexpensive, make sure you add this to your plans for family fun this winter season.
